It is not safe to convert dynamic disk to basic directly, a friend of mine encountered the problem that made the OS crashed, dangerous, especially for a server. The best method is using ghost to do an image and restore on another basic disk and resize, or copy thy dynamic disk to basic and resize there.

I believe the culprit is faulty memory. BTW you don't provide the output of module list ie lm tn which is very useful to diagnostic the problem. The culprit is faulty memory. You can run memtest to stress the ram. If memtest reports the ram is faulty, ram is bad.
